Hviezdny dátum 45047.2: Enterprise je na misii nadviazať vzťahy s deťmi Tamy, ktorých jazyk bol predtým opísaný ako "nezrozumiteľný". Keď pokusy o verbálnu komunikáciu medzi Enterprise a tamarianskou loďou zlyhajú, Tamariani unesú Picarda a izolujú ho na planéte El-Adrel IV spolu s ich kapitánom Dathonom. Tvárou v tvár spoločnému nepriateľovi v podobe nebezpečného stvorenia znovu odohrajú to, čo Tamariáni nazývajú „Darmok a Jalad v Tanagre“. Picard začína chápať význam tohto a ďalších zvláštnych výrazov. Na rozdiel od abstraktných slov odrážajú tamarskú históriu a zvyky. Dathon je však smrteľne zranený tvorom. Stardate 45047.2: The Enterprise is on a mission to establish relations with the Children of Tama, whose language was previously described as being "incomprehensible". When the attempts of verbal communication between the Enterprise and the Tamarian ship fail, the Tamarians abduct Picard and isolate him on the planet El-Adrel IV, together with their Captain Dathon. Facing a common enemy in the form of a dangerous creature, they re-enact what the Tamarians call "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra". Picard begins to understand the meaning of this and other odd expressions. As opposed to abstract words, they reflect the Tamarian history and customs. Dathon, however, is mortally injured by the creature. Back on the Enterprise, Picard can put an end to the ongoing confrontation with the Tamarian ship when he demonstrates his knowledge of their language.
