Popis
California-class ships have stripes running across the saucer hull that come in three different colors: yellow on the Cerritos, blue on the Merced, red on the Rubidoux and Solvang. While this may have been done primarily to visually distinguish the otherwise mostly identical ships (especially regarding the Cerritos and Merced in LOW: "Moist Vessel"), the real-world reason my be to indicate different primary operational areas of the ships (yellow for engineering, blue for science, red for command). As a further difference, the roughly triangular raised sector behind the bridge is gray on the Cerritos and on the Rubidoux, whereas it is the same color as the stripes on the Merced and on the Solvang.
The master systems display with 11 identifiable decks in the saucer hull points to a length of the California class of around 500m. The shot with the Cerritos and the Titan side by side in LOW: "No Small Parts" confirms that both ships are about the same size. Yet, the window arrangement of the California class as visible from the outside is inconsistent. There are three narrowly spaced window rows in the saucer rim, although there should be only two. This may have led Eaglemoss to list a length of 794m(!) in the book Starfleet Ships: 2294 to the Future. The actual design size has been confirmed by Lower Decks producer Brad Winters to be 535.2m.
Although not explicitly stated, it is absolutely certain that the Alhambra is another California-class ship, because of the striking similarities to the Cerritos that confuse T'Ana in LOW: "Veritas".
Apparently all ships of the class are named for towns in California. This, however, makes it unlikely that the lead vessel really is called USS California.
The USS Rubidoux NCC-12109 and USS Solvang NCC-12101, the two ill-fated ships commanded by Captain Dayton, have hull numbers that don't comply with the Starfleet registry scheme and may be real-world in-jokes, perhaps referring to dates.
