Hviezdny dátum 49337.4: Smrť bývalého maquisa Kurta Benderu, tretie úmrtie pri kazonskom útoku za dva týždne, vyvoláva nepokoje najmä medzi Chakotayovými ľuďmi. Na Tuvokov návrh sa Janeway rozhodne uzavrieť spojenectvo s niektorými kazonskými frakciami. Jej vyjednávanie s prvou Maje Culluh z Kazon-Nstrim a bývalou členkou posádky Voyageru Seskou však zlyhá, keď Janewayová odmietne vymeniť členov posádky. Neelix kontaktuje člena Kazon-Pommar na planéte Sobras, ale je zatknutý v tábore, kde sú väzni Pommaru aj mnohí Trabe, vrátane vysokopostaveného úradníka menom Mabus. Trabe kedysi vládol nad Kazonom, kým sa Kazon nevzbúril a nevyhnal Trabeov z ich domovského sveta. Potom, čo ho oslobodili jeho ľudia, Mabus ubezpečí Janewayovú, že všetko, čo chce, je nájsť novú planétu, kde by sa jeho ľudia usadili, bez toho, aby ho napadli Kazon. Janeway sa rozhodne spojiť sa s Trabeom. Zorganizuje mierovú konferenciu na Sobrase a pozve všetky prvé majetky Kazonu. Mabus však pripravil pascu a na konferenčnú miestnosť zaútočí loď Trabe. Stardate 49337.4: The death of former Maquis Kurt Bendera, the third fatality in a Kazon attack in two weeks, causes unrest especially among Chakotay's people. On Tuvok's suggestion Janeway decides to form an alliance with some of the Kazon factions. However, her negotiation with First Maje Culluh of the Kazon-Nistrim and former Voyager crew member Seska fails when Janeway refuses to exchange crew members. Neelix contacts a member of the Kazon-Pommar on the planet Sobras but is arrested in a camp where also a number of Trabe are prisoners of the Pommar, including a high-ranking official named Mabus. The Trabe once ruled over the Kazon until the Kazon rebelled and expelled the Trabe from their homeworld. After he has been freed by his people, Mabus assures Janeway that all he wants is to find a new planet for his people to settle down, without being attacked by the Kazon. Janeway decides to ally herself with the Trabe. She arranges a peace conference on Sobras and invites all the first majes of the Kazon. But Mabus has set up a trap, and a Trabe ship attacks the conference room. Disgusted by this attempt to assassinate his enemies, Janeway ends the alliance with Mabus.
