Hviezdny dátum nebol daný: Defiant zachytil tiesňové volanie opustenej kapitánky Lisy Cusak, ktorej loď havarovala na vzdialenej planéte triedy L. Nadviaže sa pravidelná komunikácia a uviaznutý kapitán sa spriatelí s mnohými členmi posádky. Defiant dorazí na planétu tesne predtým, ako sa oxid uhličitý v atmosfére stane pre Cusaka smrteľným. Planéta je však obklopená energetickou bariérou, ktorá neumožňuje vyžarovanie. Sisko, O'Brien a Bashir sa zvezú hrboľatým raketoplánom dole na povrch - len aby zistili, že Lisa Cusak zomrela pred tromi rokmi. Je zrejmé, že energetická bariéra spôsobila časový posun v subpriestorových signáloch.

Stardate not given: The Defiant picks up a distress call by the marooned Captain Lisa Cusak whose ship has crashed on a remote Class-L planet. A regular communication is established, and the stranded captain becomes friends with many of the crew. The Defiant arrives at the planet just before the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere becomes lethal for Cusak. However, the planet is surrounded by an energy barrier that does not permit beaming. Sisko, O'Brien and Bashir take a bumpy shuttle ride down to the surface - only to find that Lisa Cusak has died three years ago. Obviously the energy barrier caused a time shift in the subspace signals.
